Recently the FBI issued its annual report Uniform Crime Report [UCR] for 2023. The UCR is the most comprehensive assimilation and analysis of police data in the United States.

And while the report includes a lot of good news – most notably that violent crimes are down significantly - there are some concerning statistics that affect multifamily properties, particularly in cities with a population over a million people:

  • Property crimes have increased by 6%
  • Larceny-theft has increased by 2.2%.
  • Vehicle crimes got worse with a hike of 29.2%.

According to the report, these crimes overwhelmingly occur within residences, regardless of whether it’s day or night! That’s a lot of vehicle theft going on in apartment parking lots and garages.

Another concerning aspect of the UCR this year is the clearance rates for  these crimes: Clearance rates are how often the police solve the case/catch the thief. As those numbers directly affect insurance claims and rates, we encourage you to download this report.
